United in diversity (?) | Installation 50x35cm, green plastic toy soldiers
“United in Diversity” is the motto of the European Union, which first came in use in 2000. It supposed to signify how Europeans have come together – in the form of the EU – to work for peace and prosperity, while at the same time, being by the continent’s many different cultures, traditions and languages.
In reality though, today’s Europe is under a ‘war’ conducted at an economic level. A conflict that affects all areas of human life like culture, health, technology and the very existence of each member country. Technocrats and market leaders play games through accounting ratios, technical and legal aspects against the Europeans, imposing unreasonable political measures. They rule ‘the game’ in a way, that is threatening the principles of democracy itself, and the ideals of the union.
The work offers a critical view to that situation, replacing the stars of the EU flag with plastic toy soldiers that are holding guns against each other.
